We All Need Help Sometimes, Help Prevent Suicide
In the wake of losing a popular streamer Desmond Amofah, known to fans as Etika, we felt that it was important to mention something that is extremely important and that is addressing suicide prevention and mental health.
Suicide is the leading cause of death in the united states. This is what a national public crisis looks like. For adults, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death while individuals 15-34 years old it is the 2nd leading cause of death.
Suicide is preventable but how do you know if somebody may be in a suicidal crisis? People generally express one or more of the following warning signs:
- Talking about wanting to die or kill oneself
- Expressing the desire to kill or injure themselves
- Looking for information about methods of suicide
- Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live
- Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain
- Talking about being a burden to others (“People are better off without me”)
- Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs
- Acting anxious or agitated; behaving recklessly
- Withdrawing or feeling isolated
- Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge
- Displaying extreme mood swings
- Talking about wishing to harm themselves
- Expressing a heightened fixation with death or violence
I know that the subject of mental health is a difficult one to talk about in today’s society. Take a minute and check on your strong friend and help spread the message that getting help isn’t a weakness its a sign of strength.
